Tribute

Andrew Swinney, retired President of The Philadelphia Foundation, died at 67 years of age, on April 24, 2016, after a brave and accepting struggle with ALS. He was surrounded by his loving family, Leslie Kase, John Swinney and Sarah Block and Meredith Swinney and Sheri Donley. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts to honor the memory of Andrew Swinney be directed to the Philadelphia Zoo’s ZooCREW Program (Zoo Champions for Restoring Wildlife). Combining Andrew’s passion for the city paired with two causes close to his heart—education and the environment--ZooCREW is multi-year mentoring program for high school students who desire to be engaged as citizens and environmental stewards of our planet. ZooCREW connects teens with amazing animals, fostering empathy and empowering participating youth to create global change by working with keepers, scientists, veterinarians and other zoo staff; benchmarks absolutely critical to Andrew.

One half of the current ZooCREW participants come from underserved urban high schools. In addition to learning about environmental sustainability, students gain valuable experience with college and career preparation. Since the inception of ZooCREW in 1996, hundreds of at risk Philadelphia youth have benefited from the program that now boasts 100% high school graduation rate and 95% college matriculation.

Supporting ZooCREW in memory of Andrew will assure that for years to come, the next generation of global stewards will gain valuable educational opportunities and make a world of difference for animals, nature and our community.
